How GPA is calculated

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a weighted mean of your course grades. Each letter grade has a numeric value on a 4.0 scale. Your GPA reflects both how well you performed and how heavily each course was weighted in credits.

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)
  1. Convert each letter grade to its grade-point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, …).
  2. Multiply by the course's credit hours to get quality points.
  3. Add quality points across all courses.
  4. Divide by the total credit hours attempted.

Example

A student earning an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course has a GPA of (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ (3+4) = 24 ÷ 7 ≈ 3.43.

Semester vs. cumulative GPA

Use the Semester tab to focus on a single term. Switch to Cumulative to combine every semester you've added — a great way to see how a strong (or weak) term moves your overall average.

Frequently asked questions

GPA (Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of your course grades. Each letter grade maps to a grade-point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.). Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum them, and divide by total credits.

Semester GPA reflects only the courses taken in a single term. Cumulative GPA combines all credits and grade points across every semester to give an overall academic average.

Focus on high-credit courses, retake classes where allowed, take advantage of office hours, and maintain consistency. Even one A in a 4-credit course can significantly shift your GPA.

Yes — a 3.5 GPA generally places you in the top tier of students and meets the threshold for many honors programs, scholarships, and graduate school applications.
